The U.S. seafood industry, crucial for the economy and supporting 1.8 million jobs, currently imports more seafood than it produces. The authors propose the Advancing the Quality and Understanding of American Aquaculture (AQUAA) Act to promote offshore aquaculture. While aquaculture is the fastest-growing food production sector globally, the U.S. ranks 17th, importing 80% of consumed seafood. The AQUAA Act aims to establish a clear regulatory pathway for marine aquaculture, fostering investment and positioning the U.S. as a leader in sustainable seafood production. The expansion of aquaculture is seen as an opportunity to build a new Blue Economy, creating jobs, revitalizing waterfronts, and benefiting coastal and inland communities. The legislation encourages congressional support for a thriving domestic aquaculture industry.
