Endangered species protection still needed for Northern California steelhead, NOAA review finds

NOAA Fisheries has determined that Northern California steelhead still need protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) following a five-year review. Despite efforts to restore their habitat, climate change remains a significant threat, with population estimates below 15% of ESA recovery goals. Protective measures, such as water conservation and habitat protection, are essential for their recovery.

Biologist Seth Naman emphasized the importance of conserving water during summer and fall low-flow periods. Cannabis legalization has reduced illegal water diversion, benefiting the steelhead population. The removal of two dams on the Eel River will also provide about 300 miles of new habitat.

Additionally, the Biden administration plans to allocate $60 million to address climate change effects on steelhead and salmon in the Columbia River, funding repairs and maintenance of hatchery facilities through the Inflation Reduction Act as part of the Investing in America agenda.
