NOAA Fisheries Releases National Seafood Strategy Implementation Plan

The plan outlines actions we can take to enhance industry resilience and competitiveness in the face of climate change and other stressors.

NOAA Fisheries has released its National Seafood Strategy Implementation Plan, a detailed document outlining specific actions to support the U.S. seafood economy and improve the resilience of the sector. This plan builds on the National Seafood Strategy from 2023, targeting wild-capture fisheries and aquaculture. It focuses on NOAA’s services like seafood inspection, fishery financing, and market analysis, and stresses collaboration with federal agencies, states, tribes, and seafood industry stakeholders.

Key initiatives in the plan include bolstering industry resilience in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery, revitalizing Oregon’s Port of Port Orford, enhancing climate resilience in migratory species fisheries, and supporting Alaska’s seafood sector.

The plan, shaped by input from various stakeholders and over 150 public comments, will be continuously updated to address emerging challenges like climate change, labor shortages, and aging infrastructure. NOAA highlights the importance of sustainable seafood for public health, job creation, and climate resilience.
