Appalachian Salmon secures key permits to build trout RAS in West Virginia

Appalachian Salmon has secured key permits to build a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) for trout farming in West Virginia, at the former Maple Meadow Mine site. The company plans to use the site’s abundant groundwater resources, which exceed 4 billion gallons, to meet the farm’s daily water needs of 3 million gallons. The company has obtained an underground injection control permit, allowing it to discharge water back into the mine, bypassing more stringent regulations. It also holds a construction permit, with only minor remaining permits required before operations can begin. Originally planning to farm Atlantic salmon, Appalachian Salmon shifted to trout farming due to various factors.
