New legislation could ease access to credit for US aquaculture companies

The Access to Credit for our Rural Economy (ACRE) Act aims to lower borrowing costs for rural farmers, homeowners, and businesses by making loan income on agricultural real estate and rural home loans tax-exempt. Though primarily designed to assist farmers and rural communities facing high interest rates and inflation, the bill also benefits aquaculture firms and seafood processors by including fisheries and seafood-related real estate under its provisions. If passed, it could expand credit access to over 4,000 rural communities and save farmers and producers over $400 million annually. The legislation is backed by major banking organizations but previously stalled in Congress in 2023.
