Idaho is a national leader in aquaculture, and the commercial fish hatchery industry is booming. To ensure this sector continues to thrive, the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) is training the next generation of professionals through its hands-on Aquaculture Program.
A Career Grown in the Water
The CSI Aquaculture Program is designed to be intensely hands-on, ensuring graduates are job-ready from day one. Students enrolled in the program gain invaluable experience by learning and working directly at the college’s dedicated hatchery and alongside area commercial facilities.
This unique approach provides real-world training in managing and raising multiple species, from conservation efforts involving rare sturgeon and North Idaho cod, to the commercial staple of the Magic Valley: rainbow trout.
Preserving a Legacy: The House Creek Trout
A unique feature of the program is its commitment to the House Creek trout strain. Developed, bred, and maintained by CSI for nearly 50 years, this strain of rainbow trout is highly valued for its tolerance to low oxygen levels and rapid growth rate. By working with this specific, high-quality genetic stock, students master the essential husbandry and genetics skills demanded by top employers.
Degrees for In-Demand Jobs
Students can choose from an Intermediate Technical Certificate or an Associate of Applied Science in Aquaculture. The curriculum builds a broad background of experience, positioning graduates for immediate employment in commercial fish farming, hatchery management, or further educational opportunities.
