Dedicated to the Catch and the Community

It today’s feature, we are traveling to Ava, Missouri, to feature Johnathan Blakey, a key leader at Crystal Lake Fisheries. As Vice President and Operations Manager, Johnathan plays a vital role in ensuring that the Midwest and beyond stay well-stocked with high-quality rainbow trout.

From Hatchery to High-Road

Johnathan’s work at Crystal Lake Fisheries is centered on a specific legacy: “We raise only our own Emerson strain of rainbow trout to service the recreational fishing markets in the Midwest and beyond.” Getting those fish to their destination is an operation in itself, utilizing a “fleet of custom hauling trucks” that allows the farm to “target live trout markets up to 1,000 miles away.”

The Appeal of the Industry

For Johnathan, the allure of trout farming lies in its dynamic nature and the people who make up the aquaculture community.

“The fast pace and everchanging demands of trout farming have always kept my interest,” Johnathan says. “I also really enjoy having the opportunity to meet and interact with our diverse customer base, from stocking RBT into rivers for fishing and conservation efforts, to stocking small backyard ponds, to supplementing production for other trout farms.”

He also notes that the professional camaraderie is a highlight of his role: “The other trout farmers I get the privilege to share this industry with is another one of my favorites.”

Family and the Great Outdoors

When Johnathan isn’t managing operations at the farm, he is rarely found indoors. His time is dedicated to his family and the Missouri landscape.

“When I’m not at the trout farm you will usually find me at one of my children’s sporting events, or enjoying the outdoors: hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping, etc.”

A Midwest Favorite: Fried Trout Sliders

Johnathan’s favorite way to prepare the farm’s harvest is a crowd-pleasing, approachable dish perfect for any gathering.

The Blakey Method:

  • Take boneless trout fillets and cut them into slider-sized portions.
  • Dredge in your favorite fish fry seasoning.
  • Fry to perfection.
  • Place on a toasted slider bun with fresh tartar sauce and enjoy!
