How Shifting Protein Trends Open Doors for U.S. Trout

As protein buying habits across the country undergo a major shift, fresh consumer data highlights a massive opportunity for the U.S. farm-raised trout industry.

According to Blue Yonder’s 2026 Consumer Grocery and Protein Trends survey, high beef prices and supply chain concerns are driving consumers away from the red meat aisle and directly toward alternative, high-quality proteins – including seafood.

Here is a breakdown of what the latest trends mean for our market:

1. Beef is Losing Ground to Seafood & Alternative Proteins

Rising costs and recent health concerns (such as the detection of the New World screwworm in U.S. cattle) are causing shoppers to rethink their grocery carts:

  • 55% of Americans have reduced or entirely stopped their beef purchases.
  • 17% have downgraded to cheaper cuts of meat.
  • 44% of consumers are actively buying more seafood, chicken, and pork to fulfill their protein needs.

Recent retail data from market research firm Circana mirrors these survey results – showing beef sales by volume dropped 1.4% in May, even as value rose due to a 7.4% price spike.

“More than half of consumers are pulling back from beef… At the same time, demand for protein overall is not going away. Consumers are actively rethinking where they get their protein.”
– Wayne Usie, Chief Strategy Officer at Blue Yonder

2. Protein Demand is Strong – Especially Among Younger Buyers

While consumers are cutting back on expensive beef, one-third of shoppers have actually increased their total protein intake over the last six months.

Younger generations are driving this surge and are willing to invest in healthy, high-performing diet options:

  • Gen Z leads the pack: 54% have increased overall protein purchases recently, compared to 41% of Millennials, 35% of Gen X, and 20% of Baby Boomers.
  • Willingness to pay a premium: 48% of Gen Z shoppers say they will pay extra for premium proteins to maintain their diet and fitness goals, followed by 30% of Millennials.

3. Inflation & Global Pressures Weigh Heavy on Grocery Budgets

Broader economic factors continue to shape how Americans shop, with 85% of consumers worried about grocery inflation. Key concerns top-of-mind for shoppers include:

  • Rising Fuel & Transport Costs: 81% point to supply disruptions like the Strait of Hormuz closure for driving up freight expenses.
  • Tariffs & Raw Ingredients: Over 60% cite global tariffs and 57% point to higher costs for raw inputs as primary drivers of grocery inflation.

The Takeaway for Trout Producers

As consumers seek nutrient-dense, healthy, and reliably produced alternatives to traditional red meat, U.S. farm-raised trout is uniquely positioned to fill the gap.

With younger consumers actively hunting for premium, fitness-friendly proteins and nearly half of shoppers turning toward seafood, now is the time to highlight trout as a sustainable, versatile, and high-value choice for American dinner plates.
